Common Tractor Problems & Quick Fixes - General Advice only - Please refer to your tractor's operator manual.
Sometimes a quick check can save you time and get you back to work faster. Here are a few common tractor and machinery issues we see, along with simple steps you can try before calling us.

Q: My tractor won’t start – what should I check first?
-
Battery: Make sure the battery terminals are clean and tight. If the lights are dim or you hear a clicking sound, your battery may be flat.
-
Fuel: Check you have enough fuel
-
Safety switches: Ensure the PTO is disengaged, the transmission is in neutral/park, and the clutch is pressed (if applicable).
-
If it still won’t start, it may be a fuel delivery, starter motor, or electrical fault - call our service team on (03) 9742 1360 for assistance.

Q: How do I check my tractor’s hydraulic oil?
-
Park the tractor on level ground and lower all implements.
-
Make sure the engine is off and pressure is released from the system.
-
Locate the hydraulic oil sight glass or dipstick (check your operator’s manual).
-
Top up with the correct hydraulic oil if the level is low - never mix oil types.
-
If you notice milky or foamy hydraulic oil, this could mean water contamination - book a service immediately.

Q: My PTO won’t engage – what can I do?
-
Check that the PTO lever or switch is in the correct position.
-
Make sure the clutch (if required) is fully depressed.
-
Inspect the PTO shaft for any debris or damage.
-
Ensure the implement is connected correctly and not seized.
-
If the PTO still won’t engage, it could be a linkage, clutch, or hydraulic control fault - stop using the machine and contact us to prevent further damage.

Q: My tractor is overheating – what should I check?
-
(Only once cooled) Ensure the radiator is clean and free from grass, dust, and debris.
-
Check coolant levels when the engine is cold.
-
Make sure the fan belt is in good condition and correctly tensioned.
-
Avoid overloading the tractor in high temperatures.
-
Persistent overheating could indicate a cooling system fault - get it checked promptly to avoid costly engine repairs.

Q: My implement is leaving an uneven finish – what’s wrong?
-
Check that the implement is level side-to-side and front-to-back.
-
Inspect tyre pressures - uneven pressure can affect working height.
-
Make sure the linkage pins and stabilisers are set correctly.
-
If the issue continues, the implement may need adjustment, new blades, or wear parts - our team can help you.
